One thing about December 2026
Fall commencement is scheduled for 20 December. Do not infer a football event, accommodation availability, or stadium access from that date: check Penn State’s current schedule and venue information before making travel or location plans.
The light, month by month
Golden hour is not a style choice here, it is a scheduling constraint. These are State College sunset times, and they decide what is possible after a two o'clock lecture.

The honest advice
- Earlier can be easier. An early weekday may reduce crowding at popular locations. It cannot promise an empty Shrine or a fixed amount of waiting.
- Regalia is the gate. You cannot shoot cap-and-gown frames before your regalia arrives. Check the Grad Fair date before booking anything that depends on it, and consider shooting the non-regalia half of your session earlier.
- Check availability before making plans. This site is not currently accepting enquiries, so it does not claim any live date availability or scarcity.
- Autumn can be an option for a spring graduation. It may offer different foliage and crowd conditions, but current access, regalia, and weather still need checking.
- When is Penn State commencement in 2026 and 2027?
- Fall 2026 commencement at University Park is Sunday 20 December 2026. Spring 2027 runs Thursday 6 May through Sunday 9 May 2027. Summer 2027 is Saturday 14 August 2027.
- How soon before graduation should I take photos?
- Two to six weeks before is the usual answer, and earlier is better than later. For a May graduation that means mid-March through the end of April. The final fortnight before commencement is when both the photographers and the locations are busiest.
- Can I take graduation photos in the autumn for a spring graduation?
- Yes, and a lot of people do. Late September to the first week of November gives you foliage, an empty campus, and a sunset late enough to shoot after class. The constraint is regalia: you need your cap and gown in hand.
- What time of day is best for graduation photos at Penn State?
- The first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset are useful planning windows. In late April sunset is around 8:05pm, so a golden-hour session runs late; in November it is around 4:55pm. Sunrise can be quieter, but no time of day can promise an empty location.
